There are so many places and things to see and do when on vacation in our area. Here we made a list of 10 of our favourite things to see and do for both adults and children, while enjoying your vacation.

In no particular order:

2. Visit a local craft brewery

Siesta Key Craft BrewerySarasota is home to five craft breweries at last count.  Big Top Brewing, Calusa Brewing, JDubs Brewing Co, Sarasota Brewing and finally Darwins.  Stop by and see what our local brewmasters have been working on.  A wide variety of IPAs, and adventurous sours will surely be worth your time.

3.  Spend a day golfing

Since 1886, when a Scottish immigrant built a home in Sarasota and built his own course, golf has been a party of Sarasota’s history. There are 32 golf courses in the Sarasota area and almost 20 more if you include the surrounding cities of Lakewood Ranch, Bradenton and Venice.  Stop by one of them for a day of fun or frustration!

3.  Do nothing

4.  Learn to Dive/Get Certified

Sarasota has an amazing variety of sea-life and one of the best ways to get to see them is by learning to dive.  #1 rated Ocean Pro Dive  Shop offers an array of courses from a one day discover scuba class, to a 3-4 day PADi scuba diving class to a 4-7 day Open water course.

5.  Fishing Charters

Charter Fishing Siesta KeySarasota bay offers a great variety of fishing. The grass flats of the north bay offer fine snook , redfish, flounder,  and speckled trout. Three passes Longboat Pass, New Pass and Big Pass provide: pompano, bluefish, sheepshead, black drum, jack crevalle, and others.  From mid-May to mid-July Tarpon charters are available.  Offshore, find an incredible variety of species – Barracuda, Blacktip Shark, Bluefish, Bonita, Cobia, Dolphin, Gag Grouper, Greater Amberjack, Hammerhead Shark, Jack Crevalle, Kingfish, Lane Snapper, Lemon Shark, Little Tunny, Mangrove Snapper, Nurse Shark, Permit, Tarpon, and Tripletail.  CBs outfitters is close by and has a lot of fantastic local charter captains.

6.  Ringling museum/Circus museum/ John and Mable Ringling House – Ca’ d’Zan

The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art is a state art museum of Florida.The Ringling museum offers twenty-one galleries of European paintings as well as Cypriot antiquities and Asian, American, and contemporary art. The most celebrated items in the museum are 16th–20th-century European paintings, including a world-renowned collection of Peter Paul Rubens paintings. Also featured is John and Mable Ringling’s home Ca’ d’Zan (House of John) and the Ringling Circus museum – all are well worth a visit.  With 2 restaurants on site it’s easy to spend a whole day there.  Mondays the Ringling museum has free admission (does not include Ca’ d’Zan or the circus museum.

7.  Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

Marie Selby Botanical GardensThis botanical garden located on beautiful Sarasota Bay, is a sprawling world-class facility dedicated to the display and study of epiphytes,particularly orchids and bromeliads. Break up your visit to the gardens with a trip downtown for lunch or a snack. Take a few trips to catch different types of sunlight for photography or still life sketching. Sample some of the refreshments at the on-site café or relax with an exotic tea at the Tea Room.

8.  Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium

Mote Marine LabTake a closer look at our wondrous oceans by visiting Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium – home to more than 100 marine species and to interactive exhibits featuring the lab’s world-class marine research. Feed stingrays in the large stingray pool, visit rescued sea turtles, manatee, and dolphin.  See the shark tank – Mote specializes in shark research. Located on Sarasota’s City Island just north of St. Armands Circle, the Aquarium offers a great way to spend a day.

9.  Myakka River State Park

Myakka River State ParkThe park is noted for its wildlife, especially large alligators and some of the rare birds seen only in Florida, such as the roseate spoonbill, frequent the park. There are many species of fish, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals to learn about and enjoy watching as well.  Take a stroll on the canopy walk and see above the trees.

Myakka River State Park has an excellent system of hiking trails. Walking trails crisscross the eastern side of the park.  A concession offers bikes, canoe rentals and a ride aboard an airboat.

10.  Baseball/Football/Hockey

Catch a spring training game while the Baltimore Orioles are in town, or take a road trip to St Petersburg to catch the Tampa Bay Rays, or to Tampa to take in a Tampa Bay Buccaneers game, or the Tampa Bay Lightning.
